Report of the Committee...

Report of the Committee of the Society for Carrying into Effect His Majesty's Proclamation against Vice and Immorality, for the Year 1799. Together with a List of the Members.

First Edition. 8vo. [206 x 135 mm]. [1]f, 46pp. Disbound.

London: [printed by James Bateson] published for the Society by J. Hatchard, Bookseller to the Queen, No.173 Piccadilly, 1800.

Title a little soiled, with cropped signature at head and dates 1811 and 1810 in manuscript; marginal ink markings pp.39-40. This is the 8vo edition, "published by... J. Hatchard", of which ESTC records eight copies (British Library, Department of Health Library, National Library of Scotland, two at Senate House Library; Columbia University, University of Minnesota, National Library of Australia). There was also a 12mo edition, "printed... by J. Hatchard", with a different pagination (British Library and Senate House Library).

The Society was first established in 1789 and in the same year published a Brief Statement of the Origin and Nature of the Society (British Library and National Library of Wales) and republished in 1790 (Cambridge). The only other publication in its name recorded on ESTC was the Seventh Report of the Committee of the Society, dated 1795 (Senate House Library). The Society had not met in 1799, due to "the sudden withdrawing of their Secretary; and by the want of their Books, and of the Minutes of their proceedings; which for some time remained in his possession". The list of members at the end is a roll-call of the great and good, including the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, William Wilberforce and one Thomas Bowdler.
