SLATTER (Henry).

Views of all the Colleges, Halls, and Public Buildings in the University and City of Oxford; with Descriptions, which point out to Strangers all the Places and Curiosities more particularly Deserving of their Notice.

42 engraved plates with original protective blanks.

Oblong 12mo. [114 x 135 x 23 mm]. [4], [41] ff. Bound in near contemporary half calf, marbled paper sides, the spine lettered in gilt between blind "cathedral-style" tooling, plain endleaves, marbled edges. (Joints and sides a little rubbed and corners worn).
Oxford: for H. Slatter, Herald Office, [1824]

Each plate is accompanied by a letterpress leaf of explanation, though the explanation to plate 36 is missing (there is no sign that it was ever present). A little light spotting or browning but a very good copy of this rare guide to the buildings of Oxford. This may be the second edition, as there appears to have been one isssued in 1823, with Munday & Slatter together in the imprint. In the present edition the publisher's dedication is dated 1 September 1824. Henry Slatter had been in business in the High Street for some years, but as the partner of John Munday. This guide book is very much aimed at visitors to the city, with each plate leading from one building to the next.

Early ink signature and inscription on front free endleaf. Booklabel of P. R. Glazebrook of Jesus College, Cambridge.
