Genealogical Chart of the Kings and Queens of England. REYNARD (Francis).
History made easy.
Hand-coloured folding educational chart in 12 sections, backed on linen, in slipcase as issued. Folded in slip case: [174 x 108 mm]. Unfolded: [395 x 495 mm]. Slipcase with engraved title label (worn and label torn). [ebc8125].
London: Printed for G.B. Whittaker, Ave Maria Lane, April 25th, 1825.
The chart is a little browned, with pin holes at the corners. An educational diagram displaying the Kings and Queens of England and their genealogy. The central chart displays the list of monarchs since the Norman Conquest, from William the Conqueror to George IV. A list of the Anglo-Saxon, Danish and Saxon Kings from Egbert (828 AD) to Harold Godwinson (1066 AD) can be located to the left of the main circular chart and to the right is located a list of Royal Consorts. The chart is detailed - the outermost circle numbers the reign of the monarchs in succession, the second signifies the particular family or house of the monarch, the third circle represents the longevity of each reign and the innermost circle contains the genealogy.
Francis Reynard (1777 - 1841), a teacher at Brunswick House Academy in Reading, was praised for the 'originality and arrangement' of his educational chart, as a result it was reprinted and revised numerous times. However, few copies still exist due to the presumed frequent use by children.
