Mezzotint. Folio. [467 x 330 mm]. Jupiter, bearded and nude except for a loose sheet, reclining on a cloud besides an eagle. Next to him stands Juno with a loose dress and crescent in her hair. Jo is depicted as a heifer in the background whilst Cupid flies above with bow, quiver and arrow. (Cleaned and slightly worn). [ebc8158].

One of a set of ten mezzotints based off Tiziano Vecellio's (Titian) 'Loves of the Gods' which were owned by the First Duke of Marlborough and were hung in Blenheim Palace until their destruction by fire in 1861.

John Smith was a leading a printmaker specialising in the medium of mezzotints. He became closley associated with the portrait painter Sir Godfrey Kneller and came to enjoy a virtual monopoly of printing the artist's work.

The British Museum holds an impression of this print, museum number: 1868,0822.2156.
