Arthur Stuart Michael Cummings, known simply as Michael Cummings began his illustrative career working for the pro-Labour magazine Tribune before eventually moving towards the political right and replacing Sidney Strube as the politcal cartoonist on the Daily Express. Cummings further worked for Punch Magazine for over 30 years, taking over the 'Essence of Parliament' illustrations in 1953 as well as contributing to the Daily Mail, The Times, and The Oldie.
Sir Winston Churchill commented that "Cummings may well become one of the greatest cartoonists of our time" and Michael Heseltine remarked that being caricatured by Cummings was "death by a thousand strokes... but at least I die laughing". Cummings claimed to have been the only cartoonist to have caricatured every Prime Minister from Churchill to Blair.
