The Correspondence of Thomas Gray and the Rev. Norton Nicholls. GRAY (Thomas).
The Correspondence of Thomas Gray and the Rev. Norton Nicholls With Other Pieces Hitherto Unpublished. Edited by the Rev. John Mitford.
First Edition. Printed on green paper. 8vo.[176 x 110 x 21 mm]. ix, [iii], 332 pp. Bound in the original diaper grain purple cloth, recently rebacked with green goatskin, uncut edges.
London: [printed by C. Whittingham for] William Pickering, 1843.
"Twelve Copies only of this work are Printed upon Coloured Paper for Dawson Turner of Yarmouth Esq" - printed on the verso of the title. Inscribed in ink on the front pastedown "Francis Worship from Mr Dawson Turner 28th Sept 1847". The green paper is definitely distinctive but the colouring process caused an element of brittleness (the front free endleaf and half-title are detached) and there is a brown frame around the pages. It remains desirable. Bought from Blackwell's in 1970.
