The spine divided into six panels with raised bands and gilt compartments, lettered in the second and third and dated at the foot, the others with a central ornamental tool, matching marbled endleaves, top edge gilt.

Tear pp.3/4 neatly repaired at time of rebinding. First published in New York in the same year. Eight stories about soldiers and Indians west of the Missouri by the pioneering author of cowboy fiction, with illustrations by his friend Frederic Remington.
